95. GIVING BACK TO SOCIETY

Giving back to society as an immigrant in the UK is more than just charity; it's a chance to connect people, improve communities, and leave a legacy that goes beyond your personal accomplishment.  Too frequently, people focus solely on what they may gain from their new country; better income, education, and opportunities; without considering what they can provide in return.  Those that give back, not only benefit others, but they also gain respect, expand their networks, and create new chances.

Giving back does not always include handing over cash.  You can offer your time, skills, and knowledge.  Volunteering at community events, mentoring younger immigrants, or assisting with local organisations are all effective ways to make a difference. Many Nigerian immigrants have unique professional skills that can benefit others. Sharing these freely, even occasionally, helps you integrate and opens doors to new connections.

When done carefully, financial giving can have a significant impact.  Supporting local initiatives, donating to food banks, or funding cultural enterprises can make a direct difference in the lives of those around you.  By doing so, you establish yourself as a valued member of the community, someone who cares about its well-being rather than just passing through. 

Giving back has far-reaching consequences.  When you help someone, they are more likely to help others, resulting in a positive chain reaction.  This is especially crucial in the immigrant experience, where so much success is dependent on the compassion and support of others.  By giving back, you strengthen the networks that will help you in times of need.
