101. HERITAGE

One of the first things that subtly disappears when Nigerians move away from home to start a new life abroad, is their history. These are not merely cultural markers; they are our heritage, including the language, cuisine, attire, greetings, and values. Unfortunately, in the spirit of assimilation, many Nigerians living abroad frequently let these roots wither—sometimes without realising it. However, the reality is that you run the risk of losing a piece of who you are if you do not preserve your legacy. 

In the United Kingdom, where generations of immigrants have raised children, the ability to pass down heritage is an intentional act. You cannot think that your children will simply "pick it up." They will not. If you want to preserve your heritage, you must teach, model, and celebrate it at home. Make Nigerian meals on a regular basis, allow your children to proudly wear traditional dresses, and instil respect for elders in the same way that it is practiced back home. 

Some may claim that blending-in makes life easier abroad; and to some extent, this is correct. But blending in should never mean blending away. Your heritage is your leverage. It is what makes you different, and in a world that celebrates uniqueness, difference is an advantage. Nigerians are known worldwide for our resilience, our creativity, our music, and our flair. 

You should also keep in mind that heritage is a legacy, not only something for the elderly. When you teach your children or even younger Nigerians overseas to speak their mother tongue and understand their origins, you are giving them a gift that many youngsters in the diaspora desire, but lack. A sensation of belonging. They may grow up with British passports, accents, and schooling, but deep down, they will always know they are Nigerian and that being Nigerian is a source of pride.
