105. IF YOU LOSE YOUR JOB

Losing a job abroad can be devastating, particularly for Nigerians who have great ambitions and responsibilities at home. The shock, guilt, and financial pressure might make you feel helpless. But here's the truth: losing your work in the UK does not mean the end. It is a redirection, a reset, and, in some cases, an opportunity to move on to better things. What counts most is how you react, not the fact that it occurred.

If you lose your job, the first thing you should do is take a deep breath and avoid panic. Many Nigerians quickly panic, fearing deportation or the worst-case scenario. In most circumstances, you have choices. The UK provides a system of support for job searchers, which includes benefits and training. 

Losing a job is also a wake-up call to diversify your income. Too many Nigerians overseas rely on a single pay cheque. When that pay cheque stops, everything comes crashing down. However, if you have multiple income streams, such as a side hustle, investments, or freelancing, the impact will be less severe. The truth is that the UK economy values skills. You can monetise your writing, cooking, driving, cleaning, or tutoring skills. 

You must also prepare mentally. Job loss can affect your confidence. It makes you question your own worth. However, occupation does not define identity. You are valuable regardless of your employment status. Employers recruit you for your skills, experience, and resilience. The same value will draw another job. Do not let rejection limit you. 

Finally, see job loss as a teacher. Ask yourself what lessons it carries. Was it a sign that you needed to upgrade your skills? Was it an opportunity to pivot into a better industry? Was it a call to build financial discipline? Sometimes, what feels like a setback is the very push you need to climb higher. Do not waste the pain. Turn it into fuel. If you lose your job abroad, do not lose your faith in yourself. Jobs will come and go, but you must keep moving, keep learning, and keep building.
