107. IMPORTANCE OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS




When you leave Nigeria and move overseas, you quickly realise that family and friends are more than just social connections. They are your support system, your safety net, and can mean the difference between survival and despair. Life in the UK can be isolating if you try to do it alone. Bills, job, weather, and cultural differences can all have a significant impact. But family and friends can help lighten the load by providing encouragement, practical assistance, and companionship that money cannot buy. 

Your family provides you with stability. They serve as a reminder of your identity and heritage. In a world that continuously pushes you to integrate and forget, family provides identity. They hold you accountable, support you when you're down, and celebrate your accomplishments. Friends, on the other hand, are the family you choose abroad. Good friends can open doors, connect you to opportunities, and stand with you in tough times. But the key word here is "good." Not every friend is a true friend, and not every family member has your best interest at heart. You must choose wisely.

Nigerians often say, "I came here to hustle, not to socialise." But the truth is that nobody flourishes in isolation. Connections are important everywhere, including the United Kingdom. A single referral from a friend can help you get a job. A shared resource from a family member can help you save thousands of dollars. A sympathetic call in a difficult situation can save you from giving up. They help you create resilience in a system that can be daunting at times.

It's also important to invest in relationships. Don't just show up when you need something. Call, check in on folks, praise their achievements, and contribute positively. Friendships and family bonds strengthen when there is mutual respect and concern. The stronger your network, the more help you will have when a storm hits.

DON’T BE OVERLY TRUSTING Relocating overseas exposes you to many new situations and individuals.  It’s natural to be overly trusting, especially when meeting other Nigerians or Africans.  Hearing your native language or seeing a familiar face might bring comfort.  But don’t let shared ethnicity blind you to reality: deceit, treachery, and exploitation may come from anybody, including your “brother” or “sister.”  In reality, some of the worst experiences that immigrants have, come from their own people.  Painful, but true. You must learn to check, not simply assume.  Just because someone claims to “know the road” or has lived in the UK for years does not imply that they have your best interests at heart. Don’t let anyone collect your documents, charge you for “connection,” or drag you into shady businesses in the name of “helping.” Many people have lost their savings, lost job opportunities, or even lost their status because they trusted too easily....
