77. EFFECTIVE RESOURCE MANAGEMENT




Resource management is the one ability that can make or ruin your life overseas.  Many Nigerians arrive in the UK and misunderstand how quickly their money evaporates.  Expenses like council tax, energy bills, rent, insurance and transport can quickly mount up.  This is the point at which good resource management becomes a need rather than a luxury.  You must learn to budget meticulously, track your costs, and eliminate waste.

Resource management is about more than just money.  It all comes down to making the best use of your time, abilities, and networks.  Don't let your skills sit idle, whether it's cooking, hairdressing, fixing electronics, or creating content. Those skills can become extra income streams or even your main hustle if you nurture them. Opportunities exist, but they won’t come knocking; you must go out and grab them. 

Another area that is often overlooked is the management of social resources.  The people you know, the communities you join, and the activities you attend can all influence your opportunities.  Surround yourself with individuals who motivate you, rather than those who bring you down with excessive expenditures or diversions.  Immigrants who succeed here work not only hard, but also smartly, exploiting important relationships.  Join neighbourhood clubs, networking events, and professional associations that are relevant to your goals.

Learn how to manage your physical resources too, including your health, energy, and living space.  Poor health will cost you money and time, so treat it seriously.  Keep your home organised; it will reduce stress and allow you to think clearly.  When your surroundings are in order, your mind works better, and you are more productive.

In essence, effective resource management is about using the most out of what you have without burning yourself out. It is not about deprivation, but about intentional living.

DON’T BE OVERLY TRUSTING Relocating overseas exposes you to many new situations and individuals.  It’s natural to be overly trusting, especially when meeting other Nigerians or Africans.  Hearing your native language or seeing a familiar face might bring comfort.  But don’t let shared ethnicity blind you to reality: deceit, treachery, and exploitation may come from anybody, including your “brother” or “sister.”  In reality, some of the worst experiences that immigrants have, come from their own people.  Painful, but true. You must learn to check, not simply assume.  Just because someone claims to “know the road” or has lived in the UK for years does not imply that they have your best interests at heart. Don’t let anyone collect your documents, charge you for “connection,” or drag you into shady businesses in the name of “helping.” Many people have lost their savings, lost job opportunities, or even lost their status because they trusted too easily....
