127. ARE THERE PROS AND CONS OF BOTH COUNTRIES?

People who dream of leaving Nigeria for the UK often paint an image of perfection—better life, steady electricity, and limitless opportunities.  While part of this may be true, no country is perfect.  Yes, Nigeria faces challenges, but the United Kingdom also has its own set of hidden expenses and frustrations.  The smart individual examines both sides of the coin, not just the glitter on one side.  Balance is vital because it will save you from being disappointed when reality kicks in. 

Let us start with Nigeria.  On the plus side, Nigeria is home.  A sense of belonging, cultural independence, and family support cannot be bought.  Regardless of inflation, the cost of living remains lower than what you will face in the UK. Starting a business is far easier in Nigeria because of fewer regulations. The downside? Lack of infrastructure, insecurity, corruption, and an unstable economy. These issues can frustrate even the most resilient person, and they push many to consider leaving.

Now on to the UK.  The main advantage is structure.  Systems operate here.  The system rewards you for working hard, paying your taxes, and keeping good records.  Healthcare is available, public transportation is dependable, and chances for personal development are numerous.  Children grow up with better educational and social opportunities.  But what about the downsides?  High taxes, exorbitant rent, cultural shock, and an unending rat race.  Many people experience loneliness, especially if they come from a community-oriented culture and are suddenly isolated in a “mind your business” area. Even the weather is in most cases a big challenge. Sunshine is enjoyed for a few weeks annually.

The idea is to acknowledge that both countries have strengths and shortcomings.  Do not idolise one or detest the other.  Nigeria can break you, but it can also make you a billionaire. The UK can give you peace of mind, but it can also keep you running in circles, working pay check to pay check with nothing left at the end of the month. The wise approach is to leverage the best of both worlds, by making informed choices.
