133. DIFFERENT TYPES OF JOBS

One surprise for Nigerians in the UK is the variety of occupations available, and how different they are, from the perception many individuals had before coming.  In Nigeria, you may be considered successful just if you work in an office or wear a tie.  However, in the United Kingdom, jobs are diverse, and many do not fall into the typical mould.  What counts most is stability, advancement, and whether the job matches your goals. 

There are survival jobs.  Many Nigerians begin their careers in cleaning, care work, security, warehouse, retail, or delivery.  They pay the bills and provide stability when you’re first starting out.  There is no shame in them.  In reality, many have built houses back home from “survival jobs.”  They may not sound glamorous but they can be stepping stones if you’re disciplined.

Then there are skilled positions.  These require qualifications, degrees, or training.  Engineering, nursing, information technology (IT), accountancy, medicine, law, and education are some examples.  In the long run, these jobs frequently pay higher, offer more advancement opportunities, and are respected.  But they necessitate preparedness.  If you intend to study abroad, consider getting UK-recognised qualifications.  The earlier you prepare, the easier it will be to shift into skilled professions.

Entrepreneurial opportunities also exist.  Some Nigerians succeed in business by founding stores, running caterers, delivery firms, property management, or providing specialist services.  The UK is designed to help entrepreneurs, but you must be disciplined and adhere to the system.  Registering properly, paying taxes, and creating a brand can transform a side business into a recurring income.

Lastly, there are remote and digital jobs. The pandemic opened the door for many roles you can do from anywhere—writing, coding, consulting, digital marketing, customer service. These roles give flexibility and sometimes allow you to serve clients both in the UK and globally. The beauty of this type of work is that it doesn’t limit you to location. With the right skills, you can earn beyond borders. The key lesson is this: don’t box yourself. Explore different job types, adapt as needed, and choose the path that aligns with your long-term vision.
