139. FUNDING UNIVERSITY EDUCATION

University education is one of the most expensive aspects of life in the United Kingdom. This is a crucial factor for Nigerians who participate in Japa with children. Tertiary education is not free in this country, and the fees can catch you off guard if you are not prepared. Tuition, housing, and living costs add up rapidly. However, with proper planning and knowledge, you may manage it without losing money. Strategic planning is required while funding university education.

The UK offers student loans, which many young people use. However, loans are not free money. They must be reimbursed once your child's earnings exceed a certain threshold. While this makes higher education more affordable, it also creates future liabilities for the student. As parents, we must balance between allowing them to use loans and preparing savings that reduce long-term debt. Some Nigerians prefer to save through special accounts or invest early to cover part of these costs.

Scholarships are another option. Many institutions provide merit- or need-based scholarships, and international students may also benefit. It demands research, work, and, in some cases, high grades, but it is worthwhile to pursue. Encouraging your children to thrive academically not only boosts their confidence, but also relieves financial pressure. Opportunities are numerous, but only those who seek them will discover them.

Another option is to work alongside your studies. Students in the UK can work part-time to help with their living expenses. While this teaches responsibility, it is not a substitute for proper financial planning. Too much work can distract you from your studies, and without balance, the claimed assistance might become a burden. Parents and children must have open discussions about money management during these years.

Ultimately, teach your children the value of money early, prepare gradually, and explore all opportunities. Education is an investment, but only if handled wisely.
