155. LIFESTYLE

Many Nigerians overlook the lifestyle changes that come with living abroad. It is more than just migrating to a new nation; it is also about adjusting to a new way of life. From food to work schedules, leisure to social interactions, living abroad might be a culture shock at first. But embracing it intelligently is what allows you to achieve balance and peace.

One significant change is in diet. Freshly cooked meals are common in Nigeria, and they are frequently shared with family members. Life moves faster abroad, and convenience foods are readily available. While it may be tempting to eat takeaway and frozen meals every day, your health will suffer. Living abroad requires learning to reconcile convenience with healthy eating.

Another lifestyle change is in how people socialise. Back home, you can drop by a friend’s house unannounced. Abroad, social life is planned—appointments, invitations, and schedules are the norm. If you want to maintain friendships, you must be intentional. This doesn’t make relationships less meaningful; it simply means you have to respect people’s time. Adapting to this lifestyle makes you better integrated and prevents isolation.

The work-life balance abroad is another major factor. While Nigerians are known for their hustle spirit, working endlessly without rest is not sustainable. Abroad, lifestyle encourages rest, holidays, and personal time. It is a system that acknowledges burnout and actively fights against it. Learning to pace yourself, take breaks, and enjoy leisure is part of living well. Don’t feel guilty for resting. It is part of the lifestyle that sustains long-term success.

Lifestyle is not about copying foreigners; it is about finding a balance between your culture and your new environment. Keep your values, maintain your roots, but also adapt to the systems around you. The Nigerian who thrives abroad is the one who can blend both worlds into a lifestyle that is fulfilling, balanced, and healthy.
