Marriage abroad imposes a different kind of pressure. Unlike in Nigeria, where extended family is generally present, marriage abroad is tried in isolation. Couples live without the assistance of parents, aunties, and uncles, who would ordinarily step in during difficult times. That is, if you do not actively cultivate your marriage. The stress of finances, long hours, and cultural differences can quickly pull it apart. Many people underestimate how much intentionality, patience, and communication are required when marrying abroad.

One of the key criteria is finances. Both couples are frequently required to work abroad, which presents the difficulty of managing shared expenses. This financial balancing act can lead to arguments if expectations are not discussed openly. The truth is, marriage abroad flourishes when couples agree on financial plans, share goals, and avoid competition with others.

Another test is cultural adaptability. Marriage roles are regarded differently elsewhere. Systems promote equality in home tasks, and it may feel uncomfortable if one partner adheres too strictly to traditional standards. The key is not to abandon culture, but to incorporate it into new realities. Helping each other with housework or childcare is not a sign of weakness; rather, it indicates collaboration. 

Emotional connection is also important. With long working hours and a relentless grind, it's easy to become housemates instead of soulmates. That's why purposeful bonding—date nights, honest chats, praying together, or simply spending quality time—is so important. Marriage cannot operate on autopilot abroad. Without work, love can fade beneath the weight of habit.

Marriage is not automatically easier or harder abroad—it simply requires new levels of commitment. Couples who thrive are those who understand that the challenges are real but surmountable. Love is not just in words but in teamwork, adaptation, and shared vision. A strong marriage abroad becomes a source of strength in the midst of all other pressures.
