Networking abroad is not a luxury; it is necessary for survival. While in Nigeria, you may rely on family ties or old school connections; abroad, your network decides how far and quickly you progress. Jobs, contracts, mentorship, and opportunities are rarely found through web advertisements alone. They originate from people. Networking is more than just swapping business cards; it's about developing relationships that lead to new opportunities.

Many Nigerians avoid networking because they believe it is begging or condescending. However, true networking is mutual and based on value exchange. You meet people, learn from them, and provide something in exchange. It could be information, encouragement, talents, or personal ties. People abroad value confidence and clarity. If you can clearly state who you are and what you do, people will be open to connecting.

Networking happens everywhere—not just at formal events. Religious gatherings, community centres, professional groups, and even casual conversations can become opportunities. The key is to be intentional. Don’t isolate yourself. Don’t let fear of accent or background stop you. Speak up, introduce yourself, and stay in touch.
