203. RULE OF LAW
One of the most shocking experiences for many Nigerians in diaspora is the severity with which the rule of law is enforced. In Nigeria, people are accustomed to breaking the rules, talking their way out of penalties, or even outright ignoring legislation. However, in countries like the UK, ignorance is no excuse. The system is designed to catch up with you if you fail to pay your taxes, obey traffic laws, or comply with immigration regulations.
Understanding and upholding the rule of law is fundamental for immigrants. Even minor transgressions might have lifetime effects. Even anything as basic as stealing, driving without insurance, or failing to declare income might jeopardise your stay. Many Nigerians get into trouble not because they are wicked people, but because they don’t take time to understand how the system works. That’s why research and awareness are key. Before you sign any document or engage in any activity, know what the law says about it.
The rule of law also protects you. If your rights are violated, there are procedures where you can report it and demand a fair hearing. For example, if you are discriminated against at employment, you may seek redress. Understanding your rights and obligations allows you to avoid exploitation while also protecting you from breaking the law yourself.
It is critical to teach children and teenagers the importance of law in these countries. Back home, a little gra-gra or stubbornness may be ignored, but overseas, even minors can suffer consequences. Something as trivial as shoplifting sweets from a supermarket might result in police record that limits future chances. Modelling respect for the law provides an example for your children to follow.
Even top politicians and Judges who break the law will generally pay the price.
