Living abroad, particularly in the United Kingdom, teaches you that being prepared for death is not a sign of weakness or fear, but of knowledge. Death is unavoidable for everyone; the question is not whether it will occur, but whether you will leave serenity or turmoil behind. Preparing for death here, entails decreasing the strain on your loved ones and ensuring that your life's work does not disperse when you are no longer present.

One of the first steps in preparation is to create a will. Many Nigerians avoid this, but without it, your estate will fall into the hands of the system. Family conflicts, worry, and wasted expenses are common outcomes. Beyond a will, life insurance is another smart move. In the UK, life insurance is not expensive if you plan ahead, and it ensures that your children or spouse are not stranded financially. Death is painful enough on its own. Adding financial struggle makes it worse.

In our culture, many of us are taught to live solely for the present. However, living in the diaspora teaches you that planning for the future is necessary for survival. Preparing for death does not include morbid thinking. It's about living intentionally. If you know you've set systems in place, you can live with greater calm, confidence, and fearlessness.

We must also consider funeral arrangements. Funerals in the United Kingdom differ from those in Nigeria, where extended family members frequently band together to give. Funerals are expensive, and you're mostly on your own here. Setting aside money or securing funeral coverage ensures that your family is not left in disarray.

So, is it unwise to prepare for death? Absolutely not. It is the wisest thing anyone can do. As Nigerians in the diaspora, we must change our mindset. Death will come to all of us, but the difference lies in whether we leave order or disorder behind.
