182. QUEUES FOR YOUR MONEY

In the UK, one of the truths that Nigerians quickly learn is that their money is never truly their own. When you make money, it feels like there is always a queue of duties ready to take its portion. Rent, council tax, utilities, transportation, food, and, on occasion, school loans, all form a neatly organised queue. This strategy assures that before you consider luxury, your money is already spent on the necessities.

Empowerment and Inspiration

Unlike Nigeria, where bills might be negotiated or delayed, payments in the United Kingdom are predetermined, structured, and monitored. If you fail to pay your council tax, you will receive notice from the authorities and may end up in jail. Delay your rent, and eviction letters may follow. It almost feels like your pay has been pre-planned for you. Many Nigerians quickly realise that earning in pounds does not imply automatic wealth—rather, it indicates automatic responsibility.

The second queue is for family and commitments at home. Many people who Japa are viewed as "providers," which means that if your wage increases, you may receive demands for school tuition, hospital expenses, or family projects in Nigeria. These requests, while genuine, can make you even thinner. If you are not disciplined about budgeting, you may find yourself broke despite making a nice living.

The system also includes long-term waits for pensions, insurance, and savings. If you want to be stable, you must have these. If you solely spend on urgent needs and overlook the future, you will pay the consequences later. Every month, your money must serve different masters, and if you don’t create order, the queues will overwhelm you.

Of course, there are religious organisations, social circles, social celebrations and charity organisations. You’ll probably find yourself morally obliged to make donations.

Understanding this reality helps you manage expectations. Do not over-promise to family or over-commit yourself to luxuries. Your money will always have queues in the UK. But with discipline and planning, you can take control of the line and make sure your priorities are met first.
