217. WILL YOU ADD VALUE TO YOUR HOST?
Many people arrive with the expectation of finding better jobs, healthcare, and opportunities. While this is understandable, the question that separates blending in and standing out, is if you will give value to your host.
Adding value does not always include founding a business or donating millions. Sometimes it's as simple as following the law, being courteous to your neighbours, and contributing productively at work. Immigrants who flourish overseas are more likely to become assets than liabilities. Employers remember employees who go above and beyond the job description, communities value engaged residents, and countries notice well-integrated immigrants.
Consider this: each culture is analogous to a feast table. If you simply take from that table, the table will weaken due to repeated consumption. However, any contribution, no matter how small, helps to maintain things in balance. Countries take notice of this. Employers respect employees who provide solutions rather than simply complaints. Communities value those who engage rather than isolate. Giving back makes people more likely to support you in return.
Value is also determined by how you represent your hometown. People from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and elsewhere frequently form ideas about your entire country or culture based on their interactions with a few individuals. That's a big responsibility. If you carry yourself with dignity, humility, and kindness, you not only add value where you are, but you also open doors for others who will come after you. One person’s behaviour can build or block opportunities for many.
The true question is whether people will remember you as someone who took everything, or as someone who left the place better than they found it. Choosing to add value ensures that you don't only exist overseas, but thrive, contribute, and leave legacies worth following.
