When Nigerians Japa, one of the most important motivators is their children. Parents leave their comfortable surroundings and begin anew abroad, frequently with the hope of providing a better future for their children. However, investing in children extends beyond simply paying their school fees and providing them with food and housing. It is about moulding their personalities, instilling values in them, and preparing them for a world that is becoming more competitive and demanding.

Time is the first factor in investment. Too many parents focus solely on working multiple jobs to give material goods, while ignoring presence and advice. Children in the UK grow up in a different culture, which can either positively influence them or utterly derail them, if their parents are gone. Sitting with them, talking about life, teaching them discipline, and showing love, are forms of investment more valuable than money. Time cannot be replaced. When you are present, you shape identity and direction in ways no school can.

Education is the second pillar. Thankfully, the UK provides access to quality education, but parents must go beyond leaving everything to the school system. Encourage curiosity, monitor their progress, and expose them to opportunities like extracurricular activities, libraries, and online courses. Teach them about money management early. The goal is to raise children who are not just literate, but wise, disciplined, and prepared to think independently. Education is not just about grades; it is about preparing them to solve problems and make sound decisions.

Character is another investment. Good grades without good character can lead to disaster. Children must learn respect, humility, integrity, and resilience. These qualities will open doors that certificates cannot. Teach them the value of hard work and the dignity of earning. Let them understand their roots as Nigerians while embracing the strengths of the society they now live in. Cultural balance prevents identity crises and helps them stand strong in who they are.

If children are properly brought up, they not only become assets to the family, but also desirable and beneficial adults to community, society and humanity.
